Forms Of Assessment in Educational Context
Placement evaluation: It is concerned with the student's entry behaviour before the beginning of instructions. Placement evaluation seek to provide answers to the following important questions, does the have knowledge to begin the course or instructions. It helps the educator to determine or identify the student's prior knowledge without starting to learn a certain subject or a course. Example at universities in a certain course lectureray use the first lecture hours to provide a certain task to his or her students before he or she starts to teach. This will help a lecturer to determine the student's prior knowledge about the course before he or she starts to teach that course.
Formative evaluation: This evaluation is concerned with monitoring of learning process during instructions. It provide continuous feedback to both pupils and teachers concerning success and failure. Examples of formative evaluation are the mid-term tests, weekly tests and different tasks that are provided by the teacher when the lesson goes on, example at the middle of lesson a teacher provides students with a certain task about what he or she teaches. One of the function of formative evaluation is, it helps the teacher to know how his or her students have being understanding the teacher's lesson. And if the performance are bad then the teacher will have to change the mode or method that he or she has been used to other mode or lesson for students understanding.
Diagnostic evaluation: This is concerned with the persistent or recurring learning difficulties that are left unresolved by the standard corrective prescriptions of formative evaluation. The main aim of this evaluation is to determine the causes of learning problems and to formulate a plan for remedial action. Diagnostic evaluation involves gathering information through various means auch as observation, interviews, tests and consultation to provide an accurate solution on the problem identified.
Summative evaluation: It always comes at the end of the end of the course or unit of instructions. Example at universities we have university examination ( UE) which are always done at the end of semister. Also in primary schools there is primary school leaving examination (PSLE) this examination are done by standard seven students for the finishing or completion of their primary education. Coming to secondary school there is certificate of secondary education examination (CSEE) this is done by form four students in finishing their secondary education also when coming to advanced level there is advanced certificate of secondary education examination (ACSEE) also this is done by form six students for completion of their advanced education. In all levels students get rewards like certificates after the announcement of results for the students who have pass the examination. It's general purpose is grading students or certification of students achievement or providing information for judging the appropriateness of the course objectives and effectiveness of instructions.
